NEW YORK – South Africa’s Ogilvy & Mather, Rightford Searle-Tripp & Makin/Transvaal, claimed the first trophy of the 36th IBA. “Youth,” a highly produced commercial for Nedbank and directed by Giacomo Angelini, was the trophy winner in the Best Direction category, it was announced by IBA Chair Carole Black. Sixteen Television and twelve radio categories are still being deliberated.

Jane Schimel, Nithional Vice President of the Directors Guild of America co-chaired the special panel with Marie Flaherty, Esq. of Marian Talent Services/NYC. Their group met independently from the other IBA final judges to choose the trophy winner in this category. Spots representing 17 countries remain in the running.

Black, President & General Manager of NBC 4 in Los Angeles, will host the final judges at NBC Studios, Burbank on June 12 to choose the single Sweepstakes winner in both Television and radio. The IBA trophy, nicknamed “The Ollie” will be awarded along with the Sweepstakes winners at the presentation show sponsored by the non-profit Hollywood Radio and Television Society, on June 13 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. President of the HRTS is Rod Perth, also President of U.S.A. Networks Entertainment.

The IBA has the distinction of being the only international competition exclusively for radio and television advertising. Funds raised by the IBA competition benefit various HRTS Scholarship programs.
